Most students find it far too confusing and time consuming to learn to read and give up. After spending a few months learning Hiragana and Katakana the prospect of learning a few thousand Kanji becomes too overwhelming.

However, learning to read Japanese doesn’t have to be a painful and confusing experience. A product called Read Japanese Fast has helped hundred of students become proficient readers of Japanese.

Most students make the mistake of learning to read Japanese in parts. First, students learn Hiragana, then Katanana. After this they learn a large number of grammar rules. Then comes learning hundreds of Kanji. Doing all of this would take several months of considerable study time with little results. Read Japanese Fast teaches students how to read Kanji in context in 30 days.

Try Read Japanese Fast

What is the Methodology Behind Read Japanese Fast

The methodology behind Read Japanese Fast is “You have to practice reading Japanese in order to become proficient at reading Japanese.” Rather than learn Hiragana, Katakana, grammar and Kanji in parts, it is far more effective to practice reading Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji in context progressively.

The creators of the program argue that you need is to be shown how to read Japanese. In their own words. “You need someone to guide you as you attempt to read. Think of it as like having a reading coach – who can explain cultural elements, confusing grammar and ambiguous wording.”

This is what Read Japanese fast is all about. They basically reverse what most Japanese teachers would have you do – “You don’t memorize kanji in order to read, you read Japanese in order to memorize kanji and vocabulary.”

What is Read Japanese Fast?

Read Japanese Fast is an online membership site dedicated to helping students learn to read Japanese, to the point where students can confidently read kanji in context. The online course takes you through 20 pieces of writing word-byword, phrase-by-phrase with video tutorials. No other product does this.

Here is a sample of one of the “read Kanji in context” lessons

Does Read Japanese Fast Really Work?

You might be very sceptiacle of a product that claims it can have you reading Japanese in 30 days or less. However, the course is not aimed at complete beginners. It is for students of Japanese who have studied and attained a basic Japanese. To program challenges you to commit 1 hour a day for the first 10 days, and then at least 2 hours a day and for the rest of the program. You have to put in some focused study time to get results.

“In one week I learned how to apply my Japanese better than in all the many hours of memorizing grammar rules. I would definitely recommend “Read Japanese Fast” to anyone who wants to learn and use Japanese…fast!” - Paul Muscst Mesa, Arizona

“It’s a simple solution for learning Japanese by focusing on real-world reading & listening skills. Through a set of downloadable video, audio and text lessons it explores ways to master the complete Hiragana, Katakana alphabets and hundreds of Kanji.” – Yahoo Answers

Advantage of Read Japanese Fast

You will be reading Japanese on completion of the course

Expert insight on the cultural aspects of written Japanese

Proven Advice To Read Japanese And Memorize Hundreds Of Kanji – By A Japanese Native And Language Expert

Disadvantages of Read Japanese Fast

The videos can only be watched online in the members area. They can’t be downloaded

After the first 10 days the course becomes very challenging requiring at least 2 hours of study per lesson.

The Final Verdict

Read Japanese Fast claims it can have you reading kanji in context in a month. This is quite a claim! You would have to do a lesson a day and commit about two hours a day to complete each lesson. Regardless of whether you complete the course in 30 days or not, one thing I can confidently say is your Japanese reading ability will dramatically improve. The program is very effective in getting you to actually read Japanese rather than have you master Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji separately.

Most students of Japanese go about learning to read Japanese the wrong way. In fact most teachers go about teaching Japanese the wrong way. It is harsh comment, but an unfortunate reality. It is the reason why most students never reach a level where they can read real Japanese.

Most students are taught to read Hiragana, Katakana and then memorize Kanji in order to read Japanese. This is obviously a logical learning pattern or method. However, too much emphasis is placed on learning individual kanji characters and all their readings. Once a student has reached a basic level, where they can read hiragana and katakana, they should start trying to read kanji in context. The problem is students try to learn and memorize hundreds of kanji in no context at all.

Learning To Read Kanji

Memorizing hundreds of kanji readings will not help you read Japanese. More emphasis should be place on actually reading kanji in context and on “kanji vocabulary”. I struggled for years in order to reach a level where I could read real Japanese. I spent hours and hours on trying to memorize hundreds of kanji and lots of grammar points. When I went to practice to read I couldn’t. It was like having all the right ingredients, but not knowing how to use them. This is the problem you are probably facing right now with your Japanese - you know hiragana, katakana, a few hundred kanji, basic grammar, but you can’t read.

Learn How To Read Japanese

My wife and I have developed a learning method to help people learn to read Japanese quickly – in 30 days in fact. We coach students to read with screen capture video tutorials. We teach the basics, hiragana and katakana, but we mainly focus on reading kanji in context. We go through twenty reading pieces word by word, phrases by phrase explaining everything. We also take into consideration learner needs and the ambiguity of Japanese.

Culture plays an important part of Japanese, too. Most teachers of Japanese forget this. We discuss culture, social customs and the Japanese mind-set in our video tutorials. These factors play an important part in learning, speaking and reading Japanese. We also give concise easy to understand grammar explanations as well.

If your goal is to learn how to read Japanese then I urge you to give our product a go. We can have you reading Japanese in 30 days. I know that sounds like a bunch of sushi. Ten years ago, when I first started learning Japanese I wouldn’t have believe it myself. We have tested our method and upgraded our product over several years. If you have a basic understanding of Japanese and are frustrated with your slow progress consider ”Read Japanese Fast”. Our product comes with an 8 week guarantee so you have plenty of time to try our product without risk.

I have finally managed to work out how to blog in both Japanese and English so I thought I would post a kanji symbol lesson. In this lesson we will focus on just one kanji symbol and see how it can be used in a number of Japanese kanji compound words. Did you know that a kanji character can have several readings.

A single symbol will almost aways have an on-reading and a kun-reading. The on-reading of a kanji character (音読み・おんよみ) is the Chinese based reading. Kanji originated in China, and Japan started to adopt and adapt the writing system in the 4th century. On-reading kanji often have the same or very similar pronunciation to the Chinese version of the kanji. The kun-reading （訓読み・くんよみ） is the Japanese reading of the kanji.

Watch the video kanji lesson below.

Let’s revise!

車　has two readings; くるま and しゃ. Which one is the Chinese reading?

Here are the questions and vocabulary from the video;

車をもってますか　　－ Do you own a car?

車をもってません － I don’t own a car

車はたかいですね　－　Cars are expensive

車　－　　　　　くるま　　－　　　kuruma – car

車椅子　－　　 くるまいす　－　kurumaisu - wheelchair

自動車　－　    じどうしゃ　 － jidousha - motor vehicle

自転車　－　     じてんしゃ　－ jitensha - bicycle

書庫　 　－  　 しゃこ　　　　－　shako - garage

駐車所 　－ ちゅうしゃじょ　－ chuushajyo - car park

車輪　　  － しゃりん　　　　－　sharin - wheel

What did you think?

Here is a sample from our learning package Read JapaneseFast. When learning to read Japanese students often make the mistake of focusing too much on memorizing kanji symbols. Students focus on learning the readings of several hundred kanji without really practicing reading. The best way to learn how to read Japanese is to read kanji in context. Also, more often than not learning compound kanji words is more effective than single kanji characters.

The Read Japanese FastMethod

1. Go to the vocabulary section and read the words.
2. Play the audio and follow the text (email) as Kaoru Sensei reads. Do this several times.
3. Try reading the email by yourself
4. Refer back to the vocabulary to check words you don’t understand
5. Read the text yourself aloud.

Want to learn how to read Japanese kanji in context?

In this sample Kanji lesson you’ll learn how to read Japanese. If you really want to start reading Kanji check out “Read Japanese Fast ” – it will have you reading Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji in 30 days. It focuses on reading rather than memorizing Kanji. Trying to memorize lots of Kanji adds up to whole lot of wasted time if you can’t read. You don’t need to know all the readings of each Kanji. You just want to start reading as soon as possible.

When I first started studying Japanese, learning and reading Kanji seemed like an unobtainable goal. I struggled with Hiragana and Katakana, and the complexity of Japanese grammar almost had me give up learning the language altogether on numerous occasions. I started studying Japanese well before we had the Internet and spent most of my study time learning from text books. This was a very slow and ineffective way to study.

For me to learn how to read Kanji was indeed a challenge. I had to use a big fat kanji dictionary to find out the readings and meanings of kanji. It would take me up to 5 minutes to look up and work out the readings and meanings of one individual Kanji character. First, I would have to work out the radical of the kanji, correctly determine the stroke number and the go hunting in the dictionary. Eventually, I purchase an electronic Kanji Tank dictionary, but this didn’t make learning Kanji any easier.

An Effective Way To Reading Kanji

In the end, the only way I could effectively learn kanji was have a Japanese native read with me. I would have someone read a very basic article to me, teaching the kanji readings along the way. Then, I would try to read the article back. Every now and then I would get caught with a Kanji, but I would be correctly immediately and I could continue reading. This method turn the standard learning process on its head. Instead of learning kanji in order to read Japanese, I was reading Japanese in order to learn Kanji.

This method was so effective for me that years later I decided to create a product that would teach students how to read Kanji in context using what I call a kanji coaching method. The product is Read Japanese Fast. I created this product with the help of my wife. Check out the video below.

How is your Kanji coming along? If you are at a stage where you are studying Kanji then it should come as no surprise that the bulk of Japanese script is not actually Japanese, but Chinese in origin. Originally, Japanese was a spoken language without written form. It was only after contact with the Chinese was established, that the Japanese were exposed to the concept of written record. Eventually this lead to the borrowing of the Chinese writing system for recording spoken Japanese.

Onyomi and Kunyomi Kanji Readings

Because Japanese was originally a spoken language and very different from Chinese, modern Japanese is a hybrid of classical Japanese and classical Chinese pronunciations expressed in Japanese phonemes. This is reflected in the names of the kanji readings: readings that come from classical spoken Japanese are called kunyomi, and readings that come from classical Chinese are called onyomi.

Take a look at this short lesson to see both Onyomi and Kunyomi

A problem with these readings is that it is not always clear when to use which reading. There are no rules that state that a kanji is read in a particular way when used on its own, or when part of a word. The only real way to make sure you are using the right reading for a kanji when encountered in a context that you had not seen it in before, is to look it up – while sometimes one can guess whether a kunyomi or onyomi is used, it is typically impossible to be certain.

This is a frustrating aspect of learning Kanji. Looking up kanji can be very time consuming and will tempt you to give up reading Japanese altogether. The best way to learn Kanji and vocabulary is in context. Depending on each Kanji, in most cases you will find one “dominate” reading that will appear in compounds (combined Kanji words) a large percentage of the time. More often than not you only need to know one reading for some kanji. This is while trying to memorize several readings for hundreds of Kanji in no context is pointless and time wasting. If you are going to learn Kanji, then try to learn Kanji by reading it in context. We have a product that has helped hundreds of students to do just the: Read Kanji in context.
